We will use a workshop structure to teach reading and writing. –Mini lesson-Teacher models a skill to the class –Active Engagement-Students practice skill on the carpet (Turn and talk) –Independent and partner work. Teacher confers with individuals and partners on their own levels. Teachers may also work with small groups during this time.
We start with a daily math routine to reinforce and review important math skills. The teacher will teach a lesson or skill using hands on manipulatives. Students will practice the skill individually and/or in partnerships or small groups. We will use a lot of “math talk” and student lead conversations so that students can explain their thinking. We will also utilize math notebooks to help students to show their thinking.
We will focus on Foundational Literacy skills such as letters and sounds, print concepts, recognizing and producing rhyming words, blending and segmenting words, and reading and writing snap words.We will use a program called Letterland to teach phonics in a fun and memorable way. The Letterlanders help students remember each letter’s shape, sound, and direction, and they live in a very special secret place called Letterland!
We will alternate between science and Social studies through out the year. Each quarter we will teach one science unit and one social studies unit. We will Integrate literacy with science and social studies and learning will be hands on! We will have a science notebook to record what we are learning throughout the year!
